Oak belongs to the beach family, and is native to the northern hemisphere. There are over 500 species of oak, both deciduous and evergreen. It has been used as hardwood timber since time immemorial. The wood density is 0.75 g/cm3 (0.43 oz/cu In) – exceedingly sturdy material choice for furniture like shelves, cabinets, and doors.
Oak wood has a dense constitution, and is resistant to fungal attacks and insects. Oak is typically a hardwood, yet the difference also depends upon whether the wood has come from a gymnosperm tree or a dicot. Leafy trees come from dicot groups and are hardwood. Gym and fir belong to a gymnosperm group called softwood. Oak trees are found all over the world, but the best quality oak is sourced from Europe and America. When it comes to oak, we’re the masters
We get our oak from reputable sources that are FSC certified. Our solid oak shelves are made to the highest possible standards. The products have been planed and sanded to perfection. We ensure that they are straight or square and have a greater aesthetic finish. The shelves can support weight between 30kg to 50kg (several factors determine weight capacity, so better consult with a professional or talk with us directly). Please use the comments section at checkout if you require specific positioned drill holes (for instance, if fitting to a stud partition wall).
Are the Oak Shelves Waterproof?
Our shelves are not waterproof, but we can supply an additional water-resistant lacquer to our kiln dried oak shelves (for an additional cost). This is not fully water-proof but will further protect the shelves in damp conditions, such as bathrooms. Without this coating your shelves can still survive spillages, we recommend using coasters and wiping any spills up immediately.
Can I use the Oak Shelves in a Bathroom?
Of course! Many of our shelves are now living happy lives in bathrooms. Please note, however, that our shelves aren’t fully water-proof. We can add a water-resistant lacquer to our kiln dried oak shelves (for an additional cost) to further protect them in damp conditions.
Can I Fit My Oak Shelf to a Plasterboard Wall?
You certainly can! We stock a range of shelves that come with fixings suitable for plasterboard walls, up to 15mm thick. Check out the full range HERE.
How to Mount Oak Floating Shelves?
If possible, consider mounting oak floating shelves to a wall stud, to provide the best supportive base. However, if working with a drywall or plasterboard wall, you may need extra support – such as molly plugs or anchors.
Can I Put the Oak Shelves up Myself? Is it Easy?
Yes! And yes, as long as you are comfortable with using a drill. Please see our fitting instructions for a full step-by-step guide.
Can you Guarantee the Oak Shelf Will Look Like the Pictures Advertised?
Each of our pieces is unique to you and your home. That’s why we love working with real, raw materials. Knots, grains, and colour can be very unpredictable, but for us that is part of the appeal. We, however, do our utmost to deliver a product as close to your expectations as possible.
How Long Will it Take For My Order to be Dispatched?
We aim to dispatch items within 5-10 working days, however this is a guide only. Due to our products all being handmade to order the dispatch time can be longer, especially during busy periods. We will keep you informed every step of the way.
